Family Cord, situated in Los Angeles is a private cord blood bank, which was set up in the year 1997. It covers cost of blood banking for the first year, but an annual fee is charged in-case the baby has a family member who will probably cord blood transplantation, a few years later.
Lifebank, USA was set up as a family or private cord blood bank in the year 1998. After 8 years i.e. in 2006, it became a collection point of placenta derived blood as well. It became the first association ever to report a successful transplant operation with stem cells derived from placenta.

After initial process of donor registration, the cord blood is cleansed before collection in sterile bags. The stem cells are preserved and protected with the help of an anticoagulant called citrate phosphate dextrose (CDP) solution. The samples are shipped in isolated containers via medical couriers to the bank.
The successive step is laboratory processing, whereby RBC’s or erythrocytes are eliminated by a method known as red blood cells depletion. This conversion is done, since erythrocytes do not play any role in stem cell therapy and their presence might actually interfere with the therapy.
